Pistons; pistons, cooling. - Thick-walled engine parts endangered by high temperatures are protected by coiled tubing, through which cooling water is circulated. The coils are so arranged that they are free to expand under the influence of heat and filling pieces are provided to protect those portions of the walls left uncovered by the tube. The tubing may be arranged as a spiral, double spiral or double helix, or in a series of parallel tubes connected by headers or short U-shaped tubes. Two superimposed layers of tubing may also be used. Fig. 9 shows the application to a piston; in this construction the cooling fluid ingress and egress may be situated at the centre instead of the circumference, as shown. Strengthening and supporting means for the coils may be provided, and the tubes may be of circular, rectangular or ovoidal cross-section, and may be pressed into shape after coiling. Narrow tubes may be used in the neighbourhood where greatest heat is generated, and broader tubes, or chamber-like members elsewhere. The tubes may be protected against corrosion by coating them with aluminium.
