Abstract

Commutators. - The outer surface of the commutator of an electric machine is partly surrounded by an annular chamber into which a cooling and insulating liquid is supplied. The commutator 2 projects through the casing 1, and an insulating-ring 5 rotating therewith prevents leakage of the cooling liquid. The liquid, for example transformer oil, is supplied from a pipe 12, and enters an annular chamber 6 within a hollow cast-iron ring 7, in which are also formed axial passages 8. Passages 11 communicate with an annular space 10 enclosed by insulating-rings 9. The heated cil flows axially along the commutator and collects at the bottom of the casing, whence it may be pumped out for external cooling.
