Abstract

194,679. Conley Foil Co., (Assignees of Conley, E. J.). March 10, 1922, [Convention date]. Paper and like bags, making; materials, special, for linings.- Relates to a method of uniting sheets of foil applicable to the formation of packages such as are described in Specification 173,783, and consists in forming a package composed of relatively thin tin foil and a wrapping of paper by folding the foil*upon itself and folding the paper around it, a heated sealing instrument being applied adjacent the edges, and sealing the paper along its overlapping edges. As shown in Fig. 3, a rectangular sheet 1 - - 4 of foil is placed on an irregularly-shaped sheet 5 - - 12 of paper. The sheets are folded about the line 6, 11 with the foil inside, and the ends are folded inwards about the lines 17, 18 and 19, 20. This brings four thicknesses of foil together at the folds F<1>, Fig. 1, and leaves two flaps P<1> of paper on the outside. The flaps are secured as by gluing and a sealing instrument is applied to the folds so that fusion of the foil is effected by heat conducted through the paper. In another form, the double fold is dispensed with and a single layer of paper overlies two thicknesses of foil. In another form, sheets F, P, Fig. 12, of foil and paper respectivelv and of the same size and shape are folded as shown. The overlapping edge of foil and paper is then folded between the outstanding flap of paper and the remainder. The outer flap of paper is glued and the seam fused by conducted heat. The ends of the tube thus formed may be folded up and the corners 43, 44 folded in and fused in the same way. A cigar &c. may be inserted and the top closed in the same way. The foil used is preferably of a thickness of less than 3/1000".
