Abstract

193,318. Cardell, O. V. April 19, 1922. Continuous and automatic discharge apparatus, rotary; air, controlling flow of. - A rotary drying drum comprises a series of substantially horizontal rotating cylinders 1, 2, 3, 4, through which heated air passes in the opposite direction to the corn, the air passing through the outer cylinder to cool the dried corn, then through a heater and through the inner cylinders for drying the corn. The cylinders are provided with longitudinal channels which lift the corn and allow it to fall in a shower. In a modification, the heated air passes through the hollow walls of the cylinders and does not come in contact with the corn. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the corn is fed from a, hopper 15 into the inner cylinder 1, and is caused to travel by the rotation of the cylinders through the spaces A, B, C, in succession and thence past a feed roller 23 to the cooling space D, which is insulated from the drying chamber as shown at 5. Air, circulated by a fan 18, is drawn into the space D at 25 and after cooling the dried corn passes through pipes 19, 20, to the fan inlet and is forced by the fan through a heater 17 and the drying spaces C, B, A. The inner walls of the cylinders are provided with channels 27, Figs. 3 and 4, arranged spirally and the outer walls with channels 34 arranged spirally in the opposite sense, adjacent channels 34 on the same cylinder facing in opposite directions as shown. The channels 27 are provided with inclined feed-planes 30 which may be pivoted to the bottom of the channel at 31, the inclination being adjustable by means of a longitudinal bar 32. The outlet 26 for moist hot air passes through the deflector 25 for the inlet and is directed upwards to prevent mixing with the fresh cold air drawn into the apparatus.
