Distilling processes; hydrocarbons, distilling; rectifiers.-Miscible liquids, for example mixtures of petrol and lubricating oil from the crankcase of an engine, are separated by atomizing the mixture, which may be preheated, into a gas or into the vapour of a liquid such as water, with which the constituents of the mixture are not miscible, and passing the atomized mixture through a tube divided into regions of progressively lower temperature in which different fractions are separated. The liquid is drawn up a pipe 17 from a jacketed container 16 and is atomized by a jet of gas or steam from a pipe 2 into a tube 1 divided into zones by baffles 8. The zones are surrounded by jackets 3, 4, 5, through which steam is passed in succession. The steam is allowed to expand in the connecting pipes 6 so as to obtain successively lower temperatures in the jackets. Liquids collecting in the zones are withdrawn by pipes 9 to separate receivers 10. The tube 1 opens into a cooler 11 which receives a spray of water, and from which water is withdrawn by a pipe 13 and the volatile condensed liquid by a pipe 15. The zones of different temperature may be obtained by surrounding the tube 1 with a heating- coil the spirals of which are closer together at the inlet end than at the outlet end. The diameter of the tube constituting the coil may also increase towards the outlet end.
