Abstract

193,005. Soc. Anon. des Ateliers d'Aviation L. BrÚguet. Feb. 10, 1922, [Convention date]. Addition to 187,627. Shock-absorbers, application of; starting; stopping way; runners and skids; planes and the like, construction of.-In a starting and stopping device of the kind described in the parent Specification, in which when taking off or alighting upon land or water the air below the wings of an aeroplane is, maintained under pressure by a fan or air-compressor driven either by the main motor or by an auxiliary engine, the receptacle into which the air is forced when alighting or taking off, is constituted laterally by two fuselages 2, and transversely by a forward pneumatic chamber a secured to the leading edge and a rearward pneumatic chamber b fixed to the trailing edge of the wing 1. The forward chamber a is formed of a sheet of waterproof cloth, secured to the leading edge 3 and to the lower surface of the wing at a point 4, and stretched upon parallel joists 6, 7, 8 connected by cables 9, 10, 11 to thewing. The rear air-chamber b is formed of a flap 15 pivoted to the under surface of the wing, and a strut of waterproof cloth stretched upon a joist 18 and connected to the rear edge of the flap 15 and to the trailing edge of the wing. The portions of the air-chambers which contact with the landing surface are reinforced by strips 12, 17 of rubber, leather, metallic cloth, &c. When taking off or landing the air-chambers a, bare inflated by an air-fan 24, which drive air through the pipes 22, 23 into the air-chambers and through an opening 25 into the receptacle formed by the air-chambers a, b, the fuselages 2, the landing surface, and the under surface of the wing. The air-chambers a, b may be folded against the under surface of the wing when the machine is in flight, by cables 13, 19, 20, attached to the joists 7, 18 and the flap 15, and adapted to be wound upon a winch 14 located within the wing. The airchambers a, b, when inflated, increase the head resistance and the sustaining surface of the wing, thereby facilitating landing.
