Abstract

192,561. Adams, S. H. Dec. 28, 1921. Aerating; plant.-Automatic dosing tanks, preferably siphonic, are used for supplying sewage to activated-sludge aerating-tanks and for agitating or otherwise aerating the liquid therein. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 2, a siphon e in a dosing-tank d delivers liquid through a chamber f, pipe l and nozzle m into an aerating-tank o. The contents of the tank o are thereby caused to circulate through a funnel-shaped pipe n arranged over the nozzle m. Liquid passes from the tank o under a scum-board o<1> and over a sill o<2> into a chamber t. Discharge of the chamber t through a pipe q is controlled by a siphon air-lock j, which is connected by a pipe h to a dome g in the chamber f, air being released from the lock when liquid has been drained from the chamber f through a pipe k. Sludge can be discharged from the tank o to the chamber t through a valved pipe r. In a modified form of this apparatus, the pipe n is omitted and a plurality of smaller nozzles take the place of the central nozzle m. In the form of apparatus shown in Fig. 4, the pipe l delivers the liquid into the head v of a rotary distributor having perforated arms y. The shaft of the distributor is continued downwards and provided with stirring arms z. Fig. 6 shows the application of a dosing. tank 1 with siphon 2 to a long rectangular aerating tank 4, 5. The main supply pipe 3, into which the siphon discharges, has perforated branches 6 - - 11, arranged near the floor of the tank so that the jets therefrom promote the flow of the liquid through the tank and lift the sludge into the current. A sludge basin 16 is formed at the end of the tank and the sludge is withdrawn therefrom through a pipe 12 to a chamber 14 when liquid is discharged from the chamber 14 by a siphon 15. Reference is made to the use of travelling distributors for delivering liquid to rectangular aerating-tanks and to the use of the power of a distributor for operating a pump to lift sludge from a settling tank. It is also stated that the pressure of air within a dome may be used to agitate sludge or to force sludge at intervals from a setting-tank to the aerating- tanks.
