Abstract

18,058. Wade, H., [Blodgett, W. K.]. Dec. 28. Disk wheels.-In built-up metal wheels, the spokes 3, Figs. 2 and 3, are formed with flattened ends which are assembled in flat pockets formed by registering recesses provided in the contracting flanges 20, 21 of two angle rings 10, 11 which form the rim, or similar flanges 33, 35 and 34, 36 of the parts 30, 31, 32 which form the hub, and the wheel parts are secured together by electric spot, projection, or rivet welding extending through the flattened spoke ends and the metal forming the pockets. The pockets may be formed with round socket projections 26, 41 embracing part of the spoke shanks, and the parts of the rim and hub may be additionally welded together between the spoke ends. The hub is formed of two flanged tubular end pieces 31. 32 and a central flanged member 30, which is of less internal diameter to provide shoulders 45 for the bearings, and is formed of two pieces 37, 38 batt-welded at 39. Figs. 11 and 14 show projection and rivet welding respectively, the current from the electrodes 72, 73 being localized by projections 70, 71 or by rivets 80.
