Abstract

17,798. Crown Cork & Seal Co. Aug. 10. [Addition to 11,556/15.] Capsules, applying.- In a modification of the bottle capsuling machine described in the parent Specification, means are provided independent of the capsuling - die or bottle support for releasing the presser-foot. As shown in Fig. 1, a spring 57 bears against the presser-foot 54 and against an internal flange 55 on the plunger 15, and on the upward movement of the plunger, the stem 54<a> of the presser-foot is locked against upward movement by a detent lever 59. At the upper part of the upward stroke of the plunger, the lever 59 is disengaged from the stem 54<a> by a cam 63 on the operating- mechanism depressing the spring-pressed arm 62 of the lever 59, whereupon the presser-foot 54 moves up with the plunger 15 after the lug 56 strikes the collar 58. Or the spring may be arranged on the upper end of the stem between an internal lug 65, Fig. 4, and a transverse partition 66 carried by the plunger 15, and locking may be effected by an eccentric cam 70 mounted on an axis 71 carrying a spring-pressed arm 62 operated by the cam 63. The cam 70 is V-shaped in cross-section to engage a corresponding groove in the stem 54<a>, and the stem is prevented from springing by a strap 73 mounted on the axis 71 and engaging the rear face of the stem. In another arrangement, a sleeve 74, Fig. 6, on the stem 54<a> has openings registering with recesses in the inside of the guide-head, the recesses being tapered upwards and balls or rollers 75 placed in the recesses and openings. The sleeve is pressed upwards by a spring 64 acting upon the lever 76 to which the sleeve is pivotally connected, so that the rollers 75 are forced inwards and clamp the stem. The stem is free to move downwards, but is locked against upward movement, except when the lever 76 is depressed by the cam 63.
