Protectors, construction of.-In the repair of boots and shoes, a foundation sole or heel of roughened leather, canvas, &c. is treated with a solution of rubber, gutta-percha, &c., to which is applied a layer of rubber or gutta-percha, but preferably a thin layer of pure rubber, which is advantageously cold-cured. This sole &c. is secured to the boot by sewing, pegging, &c., and an under sole or heel of rubber or gutta-percha is then applied under pressure after softening the opposing faces with rubber solution, a solvent, or by heat, as the case may be. Conveniently, prepared foundation soles &c. and under soles &c., covered with protective sheets of paper, are mounted on cards for sale. The foundation sole &c. may carry protectors or studs of metal &c. adapted to protrude through holes in the under sole &c. The studs are preferably formed with shanks, the upper ends of which are riveted over washers on the upper face of the foundation sole &c. ; to prevent these studs from wearing through to the inside of the boot, a cushion layer of rubber, felt, soft fibre, &c. may be arranged between the foundation sole and the insole of the boot. Recesses may be formed in the upper face of the under sole &c. to form air spaces; or the under sole &c. may be formed of two layers with recesses between their opposing faces. The device may be soled with the under sole already secured to its foundation, and, in the case of a heel, it may be secured to the boot by a central screw or other means. The rubber or gutta-percha under sole &c. may be covered with a tread of leather or similar material which is secured to the under sole in the same manner as the under and foundation soles are secured together.
