Turning; work-holders.-In a machine of the kind described in Specification 17,709/10 for trueing the mouths of bottles or jars and for like purposes, the bottle &c. is rapidly rotated and is trued by one or more non-rotating diamonds. The bottle aX is inserted between chucks n<Î>, n in a box o with a rotary or hinged door, by depressing the lower chuck n against a spring n<2> by means of a clutch lever b. The chuck spindle n<1> is adjustably secured to the clutch member a' through a collar n<4> and a conical grip, which are slidable in the clutch member a<1> to allow for small variations in the sizes of the bottles and to permit the clutch a to be engaged after the bottle is fixed. When engaged, the clutch is locked by a snap-over device j<3>, j<4> acting on the clutch lever b through a spring-pressed thrust-rod i. The bottle is then rapidly rotated, and the driven clutch member a<1> also drives, through belt gearing, a worm h<1>, which rotates a cam h by which a rod f carrying the diamond-holder c is reciprocated. Pawls on the reciprocating rod f drive a ratchet-wheel which slowly rotates a cam m and a disk j'. The cam m acts through a lever l and an intermediate part l<3> engaging a flat d<3> on a lever arm d<2> to feed the reciprocating diamond slowly into the work. When the highest point of the cam passes the lever l, a spring f<2>, acting through an arm f<1> of the rod f, moves the diamond radially away from the work. Immediately after, a nose j on the disk j<1> raises the thrust-rod i and disengages the clutch, the snap-over device then holding the clutch out of engagement.
