Abstract

15,706. Jackson, W. J. Mellersh-, [Diamond Decorative Leaf Co.]. Nov. 6. Bronze and colour foils.-A foil such as is described in Specification 27,273/10 is modified so as to be non-staining when used for ornamenting leather &c. It is made from aluminium or other white metal powder of non-staining or non-tarnishing character, and a dissolved tinting or colouring matter in a body of protective and binding material. The composition may be sprayed on to a sized backing of glass, polished metal, &c., and removed after drying slowly. Suitable tinting-materials for producing, with the aluminium powder, a gold colour are naphthalene yellow, auramin, aurin, alcohol yellow. gum gamboge, dragon's blood, &c., one or more of these being dissolved in volatile solvents, with which the binding also is incorporated. The binding and protective material may be resinous gums, such as copal, sandarach, or mastic, together with cellulose such as acetyl or nitrated cellulose, the whole being dissolved in volatile solvents such as wood, grain, or amyl alcohol, or their esters such as amyl acetate, or acetone, or ketones, ethers, &c. Camphor or other pliable waxy material may be added to render the foil pliable and tough. A suitable composition comprises 4 oz. of soluble cotton and 3-4 oz. of gum camphor dissolved in 1 gallon of solvent, which may be equal parts of amyl acetate, benzine, and grain alcohol. The tinting-material is dissolved in the proportion of about 1¢ oz. of naphthalene yellow to 1 gallon of the composition, and about 10 oz. of fine aluminium powder is then added. It is sprayed or otherwise applied to the backing, and, in solidifying, in stratifies so that the leaf has a yellow face as well as a metallic lustre next to the backing, and a silvery face outwards. By drying more rapidly, a leaf having the same yellow colour on both sides may be produced. A protective layer or coating of impervious or colloidal material may be applied to the yellow side, or to both sides of the leaf. The leaf may also be sprayed with a sizing to render it more adherent, a suitable material being gum shellac dissolved in alcohol. Tinting-materials other than yellow may be used, such as crystal violet, safranin, cosin, fuchsin, Bismark brown, &c., and these or other colours may be sprayed upon the leaf body.
