Abstract

15,635. Avery, W. & T., and Gibbs, R. R. Nov 5 Tension indicators for wires &c. An instrument for indicating in situ the tensional stresses in flexible members such as aeroplane stays, electric cable wires, &c. comprises a circular frame 1 of aluminium &c. having flanged rollers 4, 5 resting on the wire 6 to be tested, and a vertically movable member 10 guided between rollers 8, 9 and clamped to the wire. The member 10 carries a block 23 having a clamping-jaw 24, the position of the block 23 on the member 10 being adjusted by means of a screw 26 having a loose graduated nut 27 adjacent to a scale-plate 30 and a locknut 31. The wire 6 is initially deflected to a determined extent by raising the block 23, the instrument having been previously calibrated by placing it on a vertically suspended wire weighted at its lower end. Subsequently, when undergoing a test, the wire tends to lower the block 23 and member 10 an amount depending on the stress. The member 10 is linked to a lever 12, 14 connected to a spring 16, the lever actuating a pointer 20 through a segment 17 and pinion 18. The pointer may be fitted with a pencil 22 adapted to mark the position of maximum stress during the test, for example during the flight of an aeroplane, or a loose index finger may be employed to indicate the maximum. According to the Provisional Speoification, the frame 1 may be of triangular form, with rollers at its apex and the centre of the base to engage the wire.
