Sterilizing and treating land and soil with flame ; weeds, destroying.-A movable device for sterilizing soil and destroying weeds &c. by the action of vaporized paraffin or petroleum comprises a running frame upon which is mounted a reservoir a for the paraffin or petroleum, provided with a filling- aperture b and an inlet valve d, through which air may be pumped either from a pump operated by the wheel axle or from a separate device. A discharge pipe leads to branch pipes supplying a number of burners e, f. The number and arrangement of the burners laterally and longitudinally of the frame is determined by the particular requirements of the plot of ground being operated upon. The burners are arranged above apertures k in a deflector plate l. Sliding or hinged side hoods m, which may be raised and lowered by a lever o, are arranged on the frame for concentrating the heat and protecting plants at the sides of the portion of the ground.under treatment. Each burner comprises a helix g terminating in a nozzle h, the aperture of which is covered by a strainer thimble s. Removable cylindrical jackets i lagged with asbestos or the like surround the burners. The openings k in the plate l are closed by sliding plates during the operation of starting the burners.
