Abstract
11,136. Krupp Akt.-Ges., F. Aug. 3, 1914, [Convention date]. Void. [Published under Section 91 of the Act.] Stop-mechanism.-An apparatus is provided for use in observing a target or other objective to be struck by a projectile with a long time of flight, and is designed to enable the observation to be commenced only shortly before the projectile strikes, in order that the observer shall not be tired by an observation of unnecessarily long duration. In the form shown in Fig. 1, concentric with a fixed range dial A is a time dial or annulus D which can be turned to set the zero mark d<3> at any range, and both dials are read by a pointer C which, being geared to clock-work B, is set in motion the instant the shot is fired, by releasing the arresting-device of the clock-work. The observer need therefore only commence his observation when the pointer C arrives in the vicinity of the zero mark. The differential gear F enables the pointer to be set back to the zero of the range dial. The clock has a winding indicator b<2>. The range dial A may be in one piece with the time dial and have its graduations in the same direction from the same zero mark. Similar apparatus may be located on the gun, and control a duplicate dial and pointer at the observing - station through electric distant indicating-appliances, visible or audible warning- signals being also sent. In the form indicated in Fig. 3, a friction change-speed gear G is interposed between the clock - work B and the pointer C, and the dial is not arranged to turn, but is fixed so that the zero mark does not occupy different positions of the circle. The change-speed gear is adjusted for the required range by the aid of a distance drum H and index h<2> and the pointer makes a complete revolution between firing and impact. Observation is commenced when the pointer is in a certain position determined by experience.
