Abstract

Coils; e l e c t r o - m a g n e t s.-A coil for electromagnets, dynamo - electric machines, relays, reactances, and resistances is made from wire wound concentrically in successive coniform layers, preferably all of the same axial length, with or without separate layers of insulating-material such as paper between the layers of wire. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the core C is formed with a tapered butt B, on which the starting-layers are wound. In the form shown in Fig. 2, layers of wire w form the foundation for the subsequent conical layers w<2>, the layers w being stepped at one end, so that they overlap at the other end and so form a conical surface. The wire may be interwound with cotton yarn or other textile material in the manner described in Specification 91/13. The yarn winding may be continued to form a final covering-layer, and the completed coil may be immersed in shellac, cement, paraffin, or other coating-material which solidifies into a hard shell.
