Abstract
9934. Trautmann, F. O. J uly 8. [Cognate Application, 12,377/15.] Dynamo lamps. - A dynamo or magneto, furnishing the current in a pocket lamp and driven in one direction by means of a reciprocating slide operated by hand and an opposing spring, is either provided with a fly-wheel or is driven during both strokes of the slide, to produce a continuous light. Both means may also be employed in conjunction. Several forms of driving-mechanism are described. Fig. 1 shows oppositely-directed ratchet bars R, R' engaging a ratchet-wheel X and flexibly attached to a slide, which is provided with a handle T' and retracted by a spring S. In a simpler arrangement, acting unidirectionally, a single ratchet bar is attached to a sliding bar provided with a projecting pin engaging a cam, by which tensioning and rapid release of the spring are effected; multiplying-gear is added if driving takes place during tensioning of the spring and a fly-wheel is mounted on the armature shaft. In another form, racks on opposite edges of the slide gear with pinions connected through similarly-directed ratchet devices with toothed wheels meshing with a pinion on the armature shaft. Alternatively, racks on the inner faces of two parallel bars constituting the slide gear with pinions loose on a common shaft and connected through ratchet clutches to fast wheels on the shaft. Fig. 5 shows parallel right and left handed quick-threaded screws X, X' geared to the armature A and driven by the spring-urged slide T through oppositely-acting clutches C, C'; a thick-rimmed fly-wheel G and a free-wheel device may be provided. This mechanism may be modified so as to drive unidirectionally. Another mechanism comprises two dished or crown wheels X, X', Fig. 4, gearing with a single pinion on the armature shaft and connected through ratchet-wheels and oppositely-directed pawls to the shaft of a central pinion; this is driven by a toothed quadrant K connected to a lever T. The armature spindle may be in two parts N, Q, Fig. 2, partly fitting one within the other and insulated by a washer Wand a split mica tube. Electric connexion with the armature is made through the bearings and these parts of the spindle. According to the Provisional Specification 12,377/15, a loaded armature winding or case may be employed instead of a fly-wheel; also the arrangement shown in Fig. 5 may be modified by providing a single quick-threaded screw, or two similarly threaded screws of which one drives through an extra pinion.
