Abstract
9891. King, H. J. H. July 7. Pneumatic conveyers and elevators.-In a pneumatic suction conveyer or elevator for grain, fine ore, minerals, &c., the vacuous receiving-chamber contains rotary means actuated by the incoming air and conveyed material to operate discharge valves for liberating the material without impairing the vacuum. The form shown in Fig. 1 comprises a chamber 1 into which the grain pipe 6 and suction pipe 7 are led above two sets of vanes in a wheel 17 mounted in a receiving-chamber 2 just below the ends of the pipes. The sets of vanes are oppositely sloped, so that the incoming and outgoing currents add their turning movements. The wheel turns loosely upon a shaft 9, and, by means of reduction gearing 33, 35 it turns the shaft and a discharging-chamber 3, which is rigidily secured on the lower part of the shaft. The end walls 28, 29 of this chamber have openings 30, 31, which alternately open and close corresponding openings 25, made respectively in the bottom plate 24 of the receiver 2 and in the outlet plate 26. The openings are arranged in pairs, relatively displaced so that the vacuum is never opened to atmosphere. The coacting surfaces of the plates 24, 28 and 26, 29 are ground together, and the discharge chamber may be completely encased, as indicated at 40, further to prevent air leakage. A brush 38 and deflectors 39 prevent accumulation of grain in the chambers. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the grain is drawn into a receiver at 45 on to a bucket-wheel 41, which is geared at 54, 58 to a hollow oscillating outlet valve 49 of cylindrical section, with peripheral ports 51. The grain falls into the valve through one row of ports, which close before another row opens to the delivery pipe 53, thus preserving the vacuum. Several revolving dischargers may be used, such as an arrangement of three vertical interception chambers 3, Fig. 1, rotated from the wheel 17 by gearing external to the vacuum vessel and comprising a shaft having three worms on it to engage wheels formed as flanges on the interception chambers.
