8902. Haussens, A. June 16. Bore-hole apparatus.-In apparatus for forming bore-holes in soft strata, a non-return valve b<5> is arranged between the bore-hole and a head b<6> of water or other fluid, and is operated automatically to permit pressure to be maintained in the bore-hole to support the walls thereof and also to prevent the fluid from rising in the head. The boring tubes or rods c pass through a stuffing-box b<3>, and a valve d is provided to close the bore-hole when the tubes are removed. Fluid is continuously supplied to the head and carries debris out through a valve on the tubes c; the head and valve b<5> may, however, be connected directly to the tubes c, the fluid then passing in the opposite direction.
