Abstract

1312841 Wells &c CHEVRON RESEARCH CO 19 June 1970 [20 June 1969] 30012/70 Heading E1F In drilling or workover operations in a well, fluid circulation through tubing 20 and the surrounding annulus 24 is maintained constant during the addition or removal of joints from the tubing. During well cleaning a joint 70 depending from a power swivel 72 is connected to the tubing and foam is supplied to the swivel to flow down the tubing and up the annulus. Prior to disconnection of the joint 70 from the tubing, the tubing is supported by slips 50, foam is fed to a shell 52 so that foam from the shell is supplied to the tubing when the joint is disconnected. The joint 70 is raised, a valve 60 is closed, supply of foam to the swivel is stopped, and the joint is removed from the shell. A further joint is added to the joint 70 and lowered into the shell, the valve is opened, foam is supplied to the swivel, the joints are connected and the supply of foam to the shell is stopped. Where reverse circulation is used foam is supplied to the annulus by a pipe 42 and is discharged from the tubing through the swivel and a discharge pipe. If a well liner is to be cleaned by a solvent or acid, a slug of the solvent or acid surrounded by foam is moved up and down the liner by alternately supplying foam to the shell and to the pipe 42.
