Abstract
8230. Jones, H. W. Jan. 3. Boat raising and lowering gear.-A boat davit, capable of turning about a vertical axis and having winding-gear thereon, is provided with a guidesprocket for feeding or clearing the chain. The davit is of hollow construction, with an opening for access, and the gear-box is arranged so that a single lever control provides a double or single purchase for lifting, and also operates the sluing gear. Specification 6924/13 is referred to. The hollow davit a, Fig. 1, is constructed from two inwardly-facing channel beams and two plain end plates, additional angle plates being fixed on the convex face of the davit. One of the end plates 3 is cut away for a part of its length to afford access to the interior. The lower part of the davit has heavy blocks 7 with toothed gearing coupled to the gear-box for sluing. The chain b leads over an operating sprocket d, which is geared to a guide sprocket e, and the free end is coiled at the bottom of the davit. The double and single purchase gear and sluing are controlled by a clutch 28 and travelling idle pinion 26, Figs. 3 and 4, actuated by a jointed operating-lever 29, 30, the lower end of which engages a gate in the casing 41. The upper forked part of the lever 30 which operates the clutch 28, pivots on pins 31 engaging the sleeve 26<a>, while tha lower part has a lug 30<c> engaging a slot 30<b> in a lever 30<d> pivoted on a fixed collar 31<a>. To hoist a boat from the chocks, the shaft 22 is operated by handles f, and the clutch 28 gears up the pinion 23 thereto. The pinion 23 thus directly actuates the shaft 36 carrying the sprocket d. To slue the davit, the self-sustaining brake 44 is put on, and then the handle 30 is moved up and to the left so that the clutch 28 gears up the wheel 24, operating the shaft 38, worm 39, shaft 12, pinion 11, and sluing-wheel 10. To lower the boat the brake 44 is eased ; for raising the boat the double-purchase gear is used. The lever 29, 30 is straightened and moved to the left so that the sleeve 26<a> is unlocked and moved to the left, the wheel 26 then gearing up the pinion 25 on the shaft 22 and the pinion 32 on the sprocket shaft. The handles f are held on the shaft 22 by U-shaped springs pinned thereto and having retaining- heads 47.
