Abstract

7516. Turner, W. V. May 19. Fluid-pressure.-The handle of the driver's valve cannot be removed, for changing ends &c., without application of the brakes. As shown in Fig. 2, removal of the handle is prevented by a finger 6 pressed out by train-pipe pressure acting on a piston 8. When the brakes are applied by reduction of the train-pipe pressure, a spring 11 retracts the finger, and the handle can then be removed In a modification applicable to drivers' valves provided with equalizing discharge valve mechanism, means are provided to cause an application of the brakes when the driver turns the handle of his valve to "handle-off" position, even if he should have previously closed the cut-out cock at the end of the train. This means consists of an auxiliary valve mechanism attached to the driver's-valve casing, by which a passage constantly open to the train-pipe is, when the driver turns the handle to "handle-off" position, put into communication with the train-pipe side of the equalizing dischargevalve piston, which will consequently operate the equalizing discharge valve to apply the brakes in the usual way.
