Abstract

7445. Spelman, J. May 18. Piers, retaining-walls, and the like.-A concrete substructure caisson for piers &c. comprises a heavy rectangular base and one or more light hollow cylindrical bodies mounted thereon. In one form, Figs. 2 and 3, a caisson for use as a retaining-wall comprises two rows of cylinders 12 with cells 14, 15 between them and formed integral with the base 11 and with a side wall 13 tangent to the cylinders. The base projects beyond the cellular body, so that the centre of gravity remains between the edges of the base when the structure is tilted. Apertures 16 in the base 11 beneath the cells 14, 15 admit water. The inner row of cylinders is lower than the outer row, which has water inlets 19. When the caisson is in place, the cells 14, 15 are preferably filled with earth, stone, concrete, &c. to sink the structure and support the walls 13. The inner row of cylinders are filled, and the outer row remain unfilled or are partly filled. Fig. 4 shows a modification with one row of cylinders and with walls 13 on both sides. In a modification for use as a pier, elevator shafts may be formed in the cylinders.
