Abstract

5897. Sangster, C. T. B. April 20. Tripod and like stands.-Relates to tripod mounts for machine guns, and consists in foldably connecting the stand to the gun so that the legs are automatically opened when the stand is turned down from the transport position to the firing position, and automatically closed during the reverse operation. Fig. 1 shows the stand in the transport position folded against the forward part of the gun b. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the mount in the firing position, and Fig. 6 is a vertical section at right-angles to that of Fig. 3, showing the screw-operated strap c for detachably connecting the mount to the casing or water-jacket of the gun. The member a supporting the gun is carried by horizontal trunnions d in a sleeve e mounted on the vertical pivot e<1> extending from the member f carrying the tripod legs g. When the legs are moved about the horizontal trunnions d from the transport position shown in Fig. 1 to the position shown in Fig. 3, a pin h, sliding in the support f against the action of a spring i, moves over the part j<2> of a cam surface on the member a and opens the legs by means of a grooved collar h<2> engaging projections g<2> on the legs. The pin h then engages a part j<1> of the cam surface concentric with the trunnions d. The energy stored in the spring i acts to fold the legs automatically when they are moved into the position shown in Fig. 1, the part j<3> of the cam releasing the pin h.
