Abstract

5771. Barker, J., and Phillips, T. April 17. Harness, pack, and riding-saddles.-In the manufacture of laminated metal arched members for riding, harness, and pack saddles, the separate strips or plates are aggregated in the straight form and afterwards collectively bent to the arched form. The dies used for arching are shaped to give also the requisite transverse inclination to a part or the whole of the arched portion. Three strips, for example, are aggregated as shown in Fig. 2. The bottom strip a may be cranked at its ends, as shown. The middle strip b may be made with a projecting flange c having an elongated perforation d, to form a loop. The top strip e may be formed with an integral hook f, by first making a dropforging and then working parts of the forging into tongues. The three strips are riveted together at h, i and then arched by dies n, i<1>, Fig. 6. The lower die n is recessed to receive the flange c and the hook f. The dies may operate on the whole of the blank, or only on the central portion, in which case the ends are bent separately.
