Abstract
5206. Pocock, H. J. April 6. Refuse - consuming furnaces.-In a furnace of the shaft type in which the ignited refuse is acted on by a blast of heated air supplied through tuyeres and is reduced to a molten condition, the refuse is supported at the bottom of the shaft by a, crucible of plumbago or other refractory material having a parabolic surface and the tuyeres are inclined downwardly so as to converge at points situated above the focus of the parabolic surface. The crucible is insulated and supported in such a manner as to allow for expansion, and special flues for the escape of gases surround the walls of the furnace. The upper part of the shaft is water - jacketed to prevent overheating. As shown in Fig. 1, refuse from the hopper a is fed into the shaft band falls on to the crucible c which has a parabolic surface c<1>. Air is heated in a coil g situated in the settling-chamber h and passes to an annular air chamber d from which it escapes through main tuyeres c and auxiliary tuyeres q converging at the points f, f<1>. The tuyeres q are controlled by valves r. The crucible c is arranged in a setting v of loosely packed bricks with a filling of asbestos between, and the crucible and setting are insulated from the brickwork surrounding the shaft b and the bottom of the furnace by layers of asbestos or uralite s, s<1>. Combustion products escape from the shaft b through openings k and pass through an opening controlled by a valve m to a settling- chamber n and chimney o. Radial passages w in the base of the setting v allow for the escape of gases to the chamber x which communicates by way of the valve z with the settling-chamber h and main chimney flue y, and by way of one or more passages x<1>, each controlled by a valve z<1> with the chamber l.
