Shaft furnaces.-In a shaft furnace for burning refuse, of the kind described in Specification 6175/95, the refuse is fed into the top of the furnace from a downwardly flared shoot b having at its lower end a vertically adjustable preliminary combustion chamber d depending into the combustion chamber c. A dome-shaped block or cupola i provided with a separate lining is arranged beneath the chamber d where the refuse is reduced to a molten condition by blasts of heated air delivered from tangentially arranged tuyeres m. The air supplied to the tuyeres is heated in a pipe q arranged in the dust-settling chamber r and also in the block i or a coil n. The gases pass from the chamber c through a passage controlled by a valve a' to the dustsettling chamber r. The cupola is provided with a discharge outlet k through which the molten slag passes into the pit w. A sole-plate u having a central opening surrounded by a water-cooling passage u is arranged at the top of the pit w. Passages t, controlled by valves v, allow for the passage of heat and gases from above and below the sole-plate to the chamber r. In line with the tuyeres m, and connected to the air-circulating coil n, inspection tubes extend through the furnace walls, the outer ends of the tubes being provided with mica caps.
