Charging and discharging.-Stop-end gasretorts are discharged by a drag-bar or rake, which is left in the retort during the distillation operation and can be connected to the cha.rging-mechanism when it is desired to withdraw the residues. As shown in connexion with a charging-machine of the type described in Specification 13,218/14 the drag-bar i is formed with an upwardly-turned end i' and is provided with notches i<2> for engagement with a pivoted catch j on the charging-head f. The discharged coke is deflected sideways by a shield q, pivoted to the supply shoot e and provided with forwardly-projecting bars r. The bottom b<1> of the trough which bridges the space between the charging-machine and the retort is formed separately from the sides b and is supported on rollers o for independent operation. The sides are supported on rollers m and are operated bv pinions k engaging depending racks b<3>. When the retort is being discharged, the sides b of the trough are withdrawn. The side rails f<1> of the charging-head are provided with additional notches f<4> for engagement with the catches q, so that the head f can be advanced farther into the retort to compress the charge. The middle plate c of the support for the fresh charged is arched as shown to accommodate the bar i.
