Abstract
4467. Imrie, H., [Arbetter Felling Machine Co.]. March 22. Sewing-machines with work-benders.-In machines of the type described in Specification 21,815/08, the curved needle is oscillated in planes inclined obliquely to the work-plane, and the presser separates the upper and lower plies of fabric so that the inclined needle can enter the upper ply well beneath its edge. The needle-holder 33 oscillates upon a pin 32 in a laterally swinging frame 21 pivoted in the machine-head at 15. The needle-holder is linked to a cross-head 38 sliding upon a pin 39 and linked to an eccentric-rod 54. The eccentric-rod is pivoted at 49 to the sheave of the eccentric 12. The bar 57 by which the frame is swung laterally is formed at its farther end with a yoke which surrounds a cam. The extent of the lateral swing is determined by the inclination of a radius-rod supporting an intermediate point of the bar. A screw adjustment is provided for the pivot pin 15 for the accurate positioning of the needle. The presser-foot, Fig. 13, has a lip 116 under which the needle passes when penetrating the edge of the upper fabric. The rotary hook is mounted in a frame 84 pivoted concentrically with a shaft 77 from which the hook is driven through helical gearing 81. The shaft 77 is driven by a two-to-one gearing from the main shaft. The frame 84 is held in operative position by a latch 97. The feed-dog is assisted by a presser-bar 167 pivoted at 168 upon a bell-crank lever 170. It is pressed on to the work during feed by the gear 172, 171, 170 and, swinging about its pivot 168, moves with the work as it is fed. The work-bender 120, Fig. 10, is linked to a lever 126 having a pivotal connexion with a slidepiece 137. The piece 137 is normally held up to a lever 147 by a spring 150 and moves with it, but the spring yields in order to permit the bender to accommodate itself to thick parts of the work. The lever 147 is carried by a shaft having differential connexion with the uniformly rotating under shaft, whereby the bender is so reciprocated by a cam as to remain momentarily stationary in its highest and lowest positions. The lever 126 is pivoted at 127 upon a bell-crank lever 128 having a yoke surrounding a cam 131 on a hand-adjustable shaft 132 for the purpose of the adjustment of the working stroke of the bender.
