Abstract

4376. La Fontijn, M. P. J. E. March 19. Body armour.-A shield for infantry, applicable also as a hand litter, is adapted to be carried from the shoulders to protect the body, or to be placed upright or horizontally on the ground to afford cover. Fig. 1 shows a sectional elevation, and Fig. 2 shows a plan of the shield which consists of a curved steel plate 1 provided with a peephole 2, baffle-plates 3, 4, rifle apertures 5, 6 and holes 7 through which hand-tools can be operated. Shutters 8 may be fitted to the apertures. Shoulderpieces 10 are adjustably attached to the shield by pin-and-slot or bayonet joints, and distance-pieces 11 engage the sword belt and keep the shield clear of the knees. The shield may be supported upright on the ground by means of sliding rods 12 and folding struts 13, or horizontally by means of folding struts 18. The struts 13 may be detached and hooked into brackets 17 to serve with the rods 12 as handles for the litter. Inside or outside handles 20 may be fitted.
