Abstract

4226. Six, G., and Guttmann, & Sons, O. March 17. Charges, agitating; hearths; muffle furnaces. -In a furnace for the heat treatment of materials, for example, in the manufacture of sulphate of soda and hydrochloric acid, in which the charge is stirred and fed along the hearth by a reciprocating raking-devioe, the rake fingers 4 are arranged in staggered relation in rows, and are splayed at their lower ends and bent towards the discharge points of the furnace. In the construction shown, the materials are fed to the hearth at the middle of its length and are discharged at both ends of the furnace by the operation of the two sets of rake fingers. The raking-apparatus comprises a pair of rake rods 7, to which are secured cross-heads 5 carrying the fingers. The rods are stayed apart at their outer ends by a pair of bars 8, between which moves a wheel 14 carried by an endless chain 9 driven from a motor 13 through suitable gearing. A tight joint is made around the rake rods by a p'ate which is free to move slightly in any direction in its own plane. The cross-heads 5 are guided by rails at the sides of the furnace, and when only a small number of fingers a used, two sets of rails with automatic change-over switches may be provided for giving the cross-heads a lateral movement. The plates forming the hearth 1 are stepped relatively to one another, as shown. The gases from the heating-furnace enter the baffled flue 27 above the muffle 2, and pass through downtakes at the ends of one side of the furnace to a baffled flue 30 beneath.
