Abstract

4032. Cook, W. J. March 15. Gyroscopic apparatus.-A gyroscope is used for steering torpedoes as follows. When a solenoid M is energized, a plunger EA is raised, a spring MA is compressed, and a vertical thrust is transmitted to the ring Z of a gyroscope AA by a sliding dash-pot W. The gyroscope thereupon begins to precess and this precession sets the steering-gear of the torpedo in action. Two such solenoids are used for steering in opposite directions respectively.
