Abstract
3382. Daniels, T. M., and Holschemacher, J. C. March 3. Tapping.-Nuts are tapped in a releasing-tap machine having a number of spindles 29 and work-holders 42 continuously and simultaneously revolving round a fixed support carrying feedmechanism. Blanks, transferring.-Nut-blanks are supplied by a shoot 51 and are pressed by a spring in a guide into the work-holders 42 against locating-pins 54. After tapping, the portion of the nut projecting above the work-holder is engaged by an inclined arm, and the nut is forced out into a receiver. Work-holders.-The work-holders 42 are removable and, in the event of a shortage of taps, may be.replaced upside down. In this position, feeding-in of blanks is prevented. Driving-devices.-The tap spindles are splined to pinions meshing with wheel 16 rotating in the reverse direction to the carriers 10, 11. Tap spindle feeds. - The spindles are fed against the control of springs 36 by bowls engaging an adjustable cam-track 24. Lubricating cutting-tools.-Lubricant is supplied from an internally-situated reservoir 56 and an externally-situated reservoir 57 by a series of spouts. The reservoirs have pipe connexions to a source of supply. Spindles; sockets.-When a nut is tapped, a rod 30 in the spindle is depressed by a cam 62 and ejects the tap, which falls into a receiver 44 and is positioned by a pin 45 engaging a groove in the bottom of the tap. Sleeves 46 are changeable according to the size of tap. After the tapped nut has been removed, a yieldingly-mounted cam engages the bowL 47 to return the tap to its holder. A further cam returns the receiver to permit the positioning of a fresh blank. The tap holder comprises angular members 37 notched to engage retaining-pins 40 and closed on the tap shank by springs. The members are flared as shown in Fig. 4 to facilitate the insertion of the taps. Cuttings, removing.-The bottom of the re-. ceiver is open to permit the escape of cuttings.
