Abstract

3196. Smith, J. Feb. 27. Propelling.-Two aeroplane propellers, P, P<1>, Fig. 5, arranged out of phase but working with the blade of one within the radius of action of the blades of the other, are driven in opposite directions from the central shaft C fitted with two cranks, from which motion is imparted to corresponding cranks on the propeller shafts L, R by the mechanism shown in Fig. 1. The connecting- rod 11 is double the length of the connecting-rod 12, and a balance bar 5, which is fitted to keep the rod 12 always horizontal, is provided with toggles 6. An internal swingiug frame 4 arranged within the frame 18 is caused to move up and down and sideways by the vertical and horizontal motions 7, 8, shown detached and enlarged in Fig. 6. As shown in Fig. 1, the arrangement is such that when the cranks of the shafts C, L point vertically upwards, the cranks of the shaft R points vertically downwards.
