Belts; inflating. - Relates to life-belts of the kind having a non-extensible cover or casing of such form that, when inflated, the belt assumes the curvature necessary to fit around the body. The casing is formed of an inner part adapted to be applied around the person, and one or more outer parts of greater length, connected to the inner parts to form a complete casing. In the form shown, the casing consists of an inner strip of canvas a, an outer strip c of greater length, and annular strips b connected at their edges to the strips a, c. The inner strip a is provided with flaps a' with fastening-means, and the hems may be tubular to receive running tapes. A central strip or partition d, dividing the belt into two chambers, extends to within a short distance of the ends of the casing. An inner inflatable tube e, of nearly twice the length of the casing, is doubled on itself and inserted with one half in each chamber, the filling-tube e<1> projecting through a hole c<1>. The tube e may have canvas ends e' adapted to be stitched in with the edges of outer cover or otherwise secured to the casing or to each other. The filling-tube e<1> has a valve which may be closed by rotation, or a ball valve resting on a rubber seating. The belt may be provided with two inner tubes with means for simultaneously or separately inflating and deflating; or the casing itself may be waterproof, no inner tubes being used.
