Abstract

1167. Carter, C. W. Jan. 25. Packing, metallic.-Tubular soft metal rings 4 are filled with asbestos, cotton, hemp, or other non-metallic fibrous material to hold a lubricant, which escapes through perforations in the inner walls of the rings. When used with steam, the rings preferably contain asbestos impregnated with graphite and oil. As shown, solid metal rings 6 may be used to prevent distortion of the soft-metal rings by side strains.
