Abstract

23,679. Calthrop, E. R. Dec. 7. Captive balloons; aerostats.-A captive balloon, particularly for use with patrol ships, is housed in a nest slung between two masts of the vessel by cords so that the nest may be raised or lowered from the deck or canted in any direction from the perpendicular. The balloon is provided with a conical cover protecting the lower part of the gasbag. In one form, the frame 6, Fig. 2, of the nest 1 is suspended by cables 3, 12 passing over spars 9 on the masts to the winding - drums. Cables 10, 11 are used to cant the nest in the desired direction. In a further form, the nest 1, Fig. 7, is pivoted at 27 to a pillar 25 rotatable in the platform 24 on the mast-head, and is canted by cords 31 passing over a pair of standards 29. In order to prevent loss of gas by wind pressure, the lower portion of the balloon is enclosed by a fabric cover 40, Fig. 8, secured to a metal cone 34, to which the net cords are attached. The cone 34 is provided with a ring of perforations 37 surrounded by an annular member 38 and a ring 39. The members 38, 39 act as an ejector and withdraw air from the inside of the cover 40, thereby reducing the pressure on the lower part of the gasbag. The car of the balloon may be fitted as described in Specification 20,119/14.
