Abstract

23,334. Cutler, Ltd., E., and O'Brien, L. Dec. 1. Vacuum chucks and work-holders.-A device for holding glass pieces during bevelling, grinding, or other operations comprises a hollow chuck a with a recessed seating f in which the glass piece g is held by means of a sucker device m acting on the inner face of the piece. The chuck is fixed on one end of a spindle a<2>, slidable in an angularly adjustable bearing c<2> and having at its other end a hand-wheel e whereby the chuck may be rotated, and the sucker is carried by a rod i slidably but non- rotatably mounted in the spindle a<2>. The rod is screwed at its outer end and carries a nut n, whereby the glass is pulled against a felt or other packing f<2> in the recess; the pin i<4>, carried by the rod to prevent rotation thereof in the spindle, acts also as a stop to prevent too great a pull being applied to the sucker. The spindle carries a stop-collar x to limit the sliding movement. The spindle may be locked to prevent rotation thereof.
