Abstract
22,862. Chapman, C. C., and Nu-Lines Manufacturing Co. Nov. 21. Rotary apparatus, internally illuminated ; rotary cylinder, prism, and like apparatus. - Relates to advertising devices of the kind in which a lantern carrying transparent or translucent advertisement panels is intermittently rotated in an outer apertured casing by means of a G neva-stop mechanism so as to expose successively a series of advertisements, the lantern being preferably illuminated by a light which is autom a t i c a l l y extinguished during the periods of rotation of the lantern. According to the invention, the lantern, comprising a base-plate 16 and advertisement panels 15, Fig. 1, is rotatable between the outer casing 6 and a fixed frame 27 carrying the motor 1 round a vertical stem 3, which rigidly supports both the floor 5 of the casing 6 and the bedplate 2 of the frame 27. The casing 6 is supported by means of clamping- nuts 7 and ties 8 and may either be suspended by a hook 14 or mounted on a standard, while the bedplate 2 has a screwthreaded hub 4 engaging the upper end of the stem 3. The bed-plate 16 of the lantern has a ball-bearing hub 17 carrying a Maltese-cross disk 41, which is driven from the motor 1 through gearing comprising an horizontal worm 32 which drives a worm-wheel 34, Fig. 1, on a vertical shaft 35, and a pinion 36 which drives a vertical countershaft 38 carrying a disk 43 with a pin 42 and a lunoid disk 40 respectively for giving and controlling the intermittent motion of the Maltesecross disk 41. The lantern is suspended on a transverse member 26 of the frame 27 by means of a pivot 24 connected with the roof 20 of the lantern. Mounted on the countershaft 38 is a radial Jug 45 of insulating material, which is adapted during a portion of its revolution to depress a spring-contact 47 forming with a second contact 49 a switch for controlling the illumination of the lantern. The lamps 29 and the motor 1 are energized from the same source, the lamp circuit being connected across the motor terminals and including a main switch and the automatic switch 47, 49. In the daytime, the main switch may be left open so as to dispense with the illumination. The panels 15 are held in position in the lantern by means of angular strips 58, Fig. 5, which are themselves held in position by springs 60, 61 or other resilient means and are provided with finger-plates 66, 67 easily accessible through the apertures 68 of the casing 6 for the purpose of displacing the strips 58 when the advertisement panels are to be changed. The lantern is preferably ventilated by means of a fan mounted on the motor shaft and arranged to draw air, by means of a ventilating-shaft 69, Fig. 3, in succession through holes 73 in the bed-plate 16. In order to produce colour effects, coloured screens may be arranged to travel between the lamps 29 and the panels 15.
