Abstract

22,660. Mallin, J. J. Nov. 17. Rolling.-Oval metal bars are turned and held with their major axis vertical while they are acted on by rolls to produce round bars. The bar is received on a jaw i, Fig. 2, pivoted to a slide h, which, together with a fixed jaw g, is carried by a carriage b. An hydraulic cylinder j or electric or other means moves the slide h towards the jaw g, the jaw i being turned by engaging a wedge l so as to grip the bar, as shown in Fig. 3. The carriage is then advanced towards the rolls a until a stop d engages a bar m, which is so connected to the wedge l that this is slightly withdrawn, allowing the bar to slip through the jaws, which act as guides. When the carriage b is returned for the next bar, the wedge is reset by engagement of the stop e with the bar m. The jaws may have renewable faces g<1>.
