Abstract

21,780. Payne, J. W. Oct. 30. [Cognate .4.pplication, 6347/15.] Fatty oils, extracting by pressure. An oil press is provided with means for alternately raising and lowering the pile of plates, means for charging the top plate in the lower position, and means for retaining the top plate in the upper position, so that the plates are charged one by one and assembled in the upper position, after which pressure is applied for the extraction of the oil. Press-plates and guiding-means therefor. The press-plates, Fig. 6, are provided with transverse slots c<3> and with lugs c'. In the lower part of the press are provided vertical guide-bars formed with two grooves, each groove engaging the lugs c<1> on alternate plates. In the upper part of the press, Fig. 2, curtains e are fitted to engage the slots c<3>. To allow the oil to escape, the curtains e are formed of two perforated metal plates with a layer of felt between. Ribs c<2> on the press-plates assist in confining the meal. Latch-like catches b<4>, b<5> on the top of the guide-bars retain the press-plates in the upper position. Charging the press-plates. A moulding-box f is mounted on pivots f<1> in the guide-bars and is fitted with a counterweight f<3>, so that upon release, the moulding-box f assumes a vertical position, shown in dotted lines, between the guide-bars and out of the path of the rising pile of plates. The moulding-box is filled from a pot g which slides on guide-rails on a table g<1>. The pot g is fitted with a sliding bottom which is arrested by a suitable projection as the pot is drawn over the moulding-box. The ends of the moulding-box may be pivoted so that they lie between the guide-bars when the box is in the horizontal position, and may be turned up so as to clear the guide-bars when the box is turned into the vertical position. The pivots f on which the box turns may slide in horizontal guides. A loose plate is placed on the top of the top plate after it has been charged. Actuating-mechanism. The pile of plates is raised and lowered by a supplemental ram d<Î>, Fig. 25, working within the main ram d and in its lower position resting with its head d<Î1> upon the head of the ram d. To keep the top plate in the lower position at the charging-level, the main ram d is at each stage raised to the extent of the thickness of a plate. Slide valves i, j control the two rams. Low and high pressure fluids are supplied through pipes i<3>, i<6> under the control of a valve box i<4> comprising stop valves o and regulating-valves o<1>. The valves i, j, Fig. 2, are connected by a cranked bar k of which one end is fixed to the main valve i and the other end engages a slot j<7> in the supplementary valve j. A hand-lever j<6> controls the supplementary valve j. Upon the lifting of the latches b<5>, the valve j is automatically shifted to the exhaust position, and the valve i is opened to raise the main ram. To effect this result, the latches b<5> are arranged to depress a rod h<5>, the lower end of which acts upon an offset h<4> on a shaft h' and this causes a tappet lever h to move to the right and actuate the valves. The offset h<4> may be slid along the shaft h<1> to throw the mechanism out of action. A counterweight h<3> and a spring h<8> bring the tappet h and the rod h<5> back to the normal position. To close the valve i after the main ram has advanced to the requisite extent, there is provided a rack m hanging from a pivot m<2> and having ratchet teeth at spaces equal to the thickness of a plate. An arm d<1> on the main ram pushes the lever to the right as the ram ascends. A spring m<4> suddenly pulls the rack to the left as the arm d<1> passes a tooth, and a pin m<1> at the end of the rack throws a tumbler l over to the left and thereby closes the valve i. Discharging the press. A fork-like plate sliding in guides on the head of the press is used for loosening the cakes.
