Abstract

21,608. Grover & Co., and Patient, J. Dec. 31, 1913. Feeding, registering, and winding webs.-Relates to an intermittent web feeding and winding arrangement, specially applicable to platen machines such as are described in Specification 30,069/13, [Class 100(ii). Printing processes &c.]. wherein a forme 6 on a reciprocating carriage 7 is moved over a web extending over a stationary platen 8 prior to an impression being made by a rising and falling head 9, to which the final impression pressure is imparted by slotted links 13 operated from a crank 15 on the main shaft 1 and acting on eccentric bearing-members on the ends of a pin 17 on the head. The web is delivered from a roll 18, supported on ball bearings, by a rubbercovered roll 28 mounted in a spring-supported arm 29 on, and driven by chain gear from, a shaft 33 driven from the main shaft 1. The diameter of the rubber cover of the roll 28 can be adjusted slightly to regulate the feed, by side disks 28' and a central clamping-screw 36. The web fed off the roll forms a loop 18' and passes through guides and over the platen, between stationary grippers 23, 25 at each end thereof, and over a guide-roll 26 to a winding-roll 27. Reciprocating rubber-shod grippers 24 take the web immediately adjacent to the grippers 23 to ensure that successive impressions are made immediately adjacent to one another, and convey the web forward when the grippers 23, 25 are open, these then closing and the grippers 24 opening while they return. The grippers 24 are mounted on carriages 37 reciprocated in timed rotation with the impression head between fixed stops 47 and adjustable stops 48 by levers and links 45, 43, 42, 41, 39 from a link 38 pivoted to the impression-operating links 13, and tubular connecting-rods 46 transmit the movement to the carriages through springs 49. which yield and permit the carriages to remain at rest against the stop for a short period. Tappets 51 on the impression head engage the tails 24<1> of the grippers 24 to open them against their closing-springs at the forward end of their travel, and they are retained open by pins 52 on the gripper carriage engaging slots 53<1> in catches 53 pivoted to the grippers until the end of their return travel, when tappets 54 are operated from a rock-shaft 65 to lift the catches and return the pins. The grippers 23 are opened by a rod 59 from a. cam 57 on the shaft 33, and the grippers 25, which are combined with punches for making register holes in the web and constructed with a. compressible rubber clamping-ring surrounding a punch, are opened by adjustable rods 67 from a rock-shaft 65 operated by a cam-actuated arm 62, which mechanism also operates the tappets 54. The trip-arm 56 for the impression head may, when operated, serve to displace the arm 62 clear of its actuating-cam, in which event the grippers 24 remain open when no impression is made. The printed web is wound up intermittently on the roll 27 by a weight hung from a loose sleeve 72 carrying a pawl 73 engaging a ratchet-wheel 71 on the roll, the weight cord 74 being connected to the carriage of the grippers 24. Another weight and ratchet device arranged at the other end of the roll serves to keep the wound-up web taut on the return stroke of the grippers 24, the cord 75 of the weight being connected to a lug on the lever 45.
