Abstract

21,523. Marks, E. C. R., [Fitchburg Machine Works]. Oct. 26. Chucks. - A spring chuck, particularly for automatic lathes, screw machines, &c. operating on long bar stock, consists of a spring bush fitting loosely in a spring sleeve and secured thereto to prevent accidental relative, longitudinal displacement. The bushing is pushed out rearwardly and replaced by bushings to suit work of different sizes or shapes. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the split sleeve 10, which is pushed against the tapered nose 11 of the hollow spindle to close the chuck, has a bore which is cylindrical at its rear part and tapered at its front part. The split bushing 14 is correspondingly tapered externally on its front end and shouldered so as to prevent axial displacement in either direction in the sleeve, and is connected to the sleeve at its rear end by a key 17 to prevent relative rotary displacement. In the form shown in Fig. 6, relative longitudinal and rotary displacement are prevented by a screw 17<a> engaging a recess in the bushing. In this case, the front ends of the sleeve and bushings are cylindrical.
