Recording by co-ordinates.-In a device such as is described in Specifications 14,473/14 and 362/15 for recording the movements of a ship's rudder, magnetically-controlled pencils are provided to record on the same chart whether the engines are set to run ahead or astern. Connected to the engine weigh-shaft 1 by a link 2 is a valve plunger 3 by means of which steam is directed from a pipe 4 to one of the pipes 5, 6, leading respectively to cylinders 7, 20 having spring-pressed pistons 8, 21. The arrangement is such that, when the engines are set to run astern, the piston 8 is raised to close electric contacts 9, thus energizing a magnet 12 to bring a pencil 14 into contact with the recording-chart. The pencil 18 is held away from the chart by a magnet 16; but when the engines are set to run ahead, the piston 21 is raised, breaking circuit at the contacts 22 and allowing a spring 19 to press the pencil 18 against the chart. If a pencil to indicate astern running only be required, the valve 3 is replaced by the one shown in Fig. 2, having corresponding bores 31, 32 in the barrel and casing, so that when the steam supply is cut off, the cylinder 7 may exhaust to atmosphere. The pencils themselves, or the portions of the chart on which they mark, mav be of different colours. Specification 9428/11, [Class 118 (ii), Signals], is referred to.
