Motors, controlling.-An electric motor for hoisting and lowering is connected up when lowering with a resistance r-r<3> in series in the armature circuit and with the field-magnet winding across the armature, and the control of the 'motor is effected by introducing a resistance r<4>-r<7> into the field-winding circuit without varying the resistance in the armature circuit and then transferring the resistance r-r<3> from the armature circuit to the field circuit. A brake coil B is arranged in series with the field winding F and resistances r-r<7>. When the controller is in its 'off' position, the armature A and field winding F are short-circuited through a resistance R. In the first lowering position 1, the armature A is connected across the field winding F and brake coil B, the resistance r<4>-r<7> being short-circuited and the resistance r-r<3> being connected in the external circuit. As the controller is moved from position 1 to position 5, the resistance r<4>-r<7> is gradually introduced into the field-winding circuit, further movement of the controller transferring the resistance r-r<3> from the external circuit to the field-winding circuit.
