Abstract

20,119. Calthrop, E. R. Sept. 24. Captive balloons; cars, suspending. The car of a captive balloon is suspended by a universal joint so that it is not affected by the spin and inclination of the aerostat due to wind pressure. The car swings on a yoke 6 rocking in the bearing 5, which can rotate freely on ball bearings in a tubular member 4 through which the valve cord passes and which is carried on the balloon by stays 3. The pull of the holding-cable is transmitted to the yoke 6 through a yoke 10 and cords 9. The upper ends of the cords 9 may be attached to adjustable levers on the ends of the yoke 6. The yoke 6 may rotate in brackets fixed to the car, and it may support the aerials of a wireless-telegraph apparatus. In a modification, Fig. 6, the sleeve is attached to the balloon by metal cones 36, 37, 38, 39. In another modification, Fig. 5, the balloon carries by stays 33 a ring 30 which supports by a ball bearing a ring 29 forming one member of a spherical bearing, the other member 28 of which supports the car by the stays 27. A rubber cushion 34 or a roller 35 serves as a buffer to limit the angular displacement of the balloon.
