Yarns, marking and measuring.-Relates to measuring and marking mechanism for tape sizing and other machines in which a marking - hammer is actuated at predetermined intervals by means of a reversing- pinion, which actuates an index dial and is alternately - brought into gear with two oppositely rotating wheels driven from the measuring-roller for a period regulated by setting-devices on the index dial. The reversing-pinion imparts motion to a sun-wheel having a greater or smaller number of teeth than two planet-wheels adjustably carried by the index dial. The index dial can be rotated in either direction through a space determined by the relative positions of stops, which rotate with the dial, transfer motion to the marking-hammer, and move the reversing- pinion from one of the oppositely rotating driving-wheels to the other. The period of engagement of the reversing-pinion with the driving-wheels is further dependent upon the relative positions of stops on the planet-wheels with respect to a stop on the sun-wheel. The mechanism is operated from the measuring-roll B<3>, which drives the oppositely rotating driving- wheels B<1>, B<2>. The reversing-pinion b<3> alternately engages the wheels B<1>, B<2>, and is integral with a wheel B, which drives a spur wheel B<4> with which the sun wheel B<5> is connected. The planet-wheels C<1>, C<2> having, in the form shown, one tooth less than the sun wheel B<5> are adjustably carried on the face of the loosely mounted index dial C. The index dial and one of the planet-wheels are graduated. The sun-wheel is formed with two stops b<5>, b<6> adapted to interlock with stops c<1>, c<2> on the planet-wheels. When either of the stops on the sun-wheel engages its mating stop on the planet-wheels, motion is transmitted to the index dial C which is rotated until either a fixed stop c<3> or a movable spring stop c' thereon engages a projection d which actuates the marking-hammer. The amount of rotation of the measuring-roll effected between the actuations of the hammer is determined by setting the movable stop c<4> and by rotating the planetwheel c<2> till the required graduation is opposite a pointer on the sun-wheel. The projection d is carried on a pivoted arm, which carries a chain pulley d<1> for transmitting motion to the marking-hammer. The hammer is operated by two adjustable cams d<6>, d<7> on a shaft d<5> on a threaded part d<4> of which a second chain pulley d<3> is mounted; the pulley d<3> is internally threaded to engage the threaded part d<4>. On the rotation of the chain wheel d<3>, the shaft d<5> slides to bring one of the cams d<6>, d<7> under the hammer-actuating arm a, this sliding motion being limited by stops d<12>, d<13>. Further rotation of the chain wheel effects the rotation of the shaft d<5> and the actuation of the hammer. Simultaneously, the reversing-pinion is moved from one driving-gear to the other. For this purpose, the cam d' is formed with a projection d<14> adapted to engage opposite sides of a loosely mounted arm d<15> connected by a slotted link d<17> with a stud b' on a lever b<8>, which carries the reversing-pinion b<3>. As the stepped part of the cam d<6> or d' passes the hammer-operating arm a, the arm d<15> is moved past its central position and moves the slotted link d<17> endways, this movement being completed by a spring d<22> or weight. The device may be thrown out of gear by stopping the reversing- pinion in a midway position. For this pur_ pose, a distance-piece E comprising a sleeve having a part cut away can be moved between two set-screws b<11>, b<12> which normally determine the depth of tooth engagement between the reversing-pinion and the driving-gears.
