Winding - machines; doffing - arrangements. -In machines for winding yarn, thread, cord, ropes, &c., means are provided whereby the wound package may be detached from the spindle by the rotation of the spindle itself. The body S of the spindle slides within the hollow main shaft C and is connected to it by a key- and-slot arrangement c<1>, s<9>. The spindle is considerably longer than the shaft, and the portion which projects when the spindle is in the position shown in Fig. 2 is provided with a screwthread s<8> and with a head r. The core x on which the package is wound is placed on the end of a sliding spring pin S' and on a reduced portion of the end of the spindle S, the ends of the spindle and spring pin being correspondingly formed, as with a pin and socket s<6>, s<3> and with ratchet teeth s<5>; s<4>, so that when the spindle is pushed into the core x and the machine is running, the spindle and spring pin will rotate together. During the winding operation, the spindle is prevented from moving longitudinally by reason of a socket v on a spring lever V engaging with the head r on the spindle. When the winding is completed, the socket v is disengaged from the head r, and a segment v<2> of a nut is brought into engagement with the screw-threaded part of the spindle, so that as the spindle continues to rotate, it is withdrawn from the wound package. Both the socket v and the nut segment v<2> are operated by the lever w, and both may be held free of the spindle when required for reinsertion of the spindle in the core &c. From a pulley F on the main shaft is driven a parallel shaft provided with a traversing-screw and operating a jointed thread-guide.
