Abstract
19,338. Grant, J. H. Sept. 2. Hopper wagons. - Discharge hoppers for railway wagons &c., of the kind having oppositely - inclined sides with sliding doors moving parallel thereto, are provided with pivoted oppositely-inclined apron-plates normally meeting at their upper edges at the meeting point of the doors. The doors a, b, which normally rest by their own weight on a central girder c, are provided with rollers d running on tracks e, and are raised by chains f wound on shafts g rotated from hand-wheels j through gears h, i. Pawls or the like are provided to keep the doors open, and the hand-wheels are preferably provided with clutching-devices so that they need not rotate when the doors close. In a modification, the shafts g are worm-driven from cross-shafts each provided with a bevelwheel adapted to be independently engaged with a driven bevel-wheel so that the doors may be actuated either simultaneously or separately. The apron-plates l are pivoted on longitudinal supports k and are normally held in a suitable position for side-dumping by the engagement of their inner ends with the girder c. To hold the apron-plates open for central dumping, they are each provided with a rocking-lever o, Fig. 3, operated by a link p provided with a handlever q adapted to be locked by a pin to a plate s. According to the Provisional Specification, each apron-plate is operated by a central rocking-lever controlled by a hand-lever and connected to two horizontal locking bars or bolts, the ends of which lock into holes or the like in a stationary part of the wagon.
