Abstract
18,268. Baker, B. D. Aug. 7. Coating processes ; varnishes. - Articles, for instance wheel rims and door handles, are coated with celluloid by first coating with a lacquer-like solution of celluloid in a mixture of acetone and American turpentine, for instance by brushing or spraying and then immersing in a viscom solution of celluloid in acetone, amyl acetate, and American turpentine, which has preferably been allowed to stand until free from air bubbles. The withdrawal of the article from the coating-bath takes place quickly at first and slowly towards the end so that runners or beads are not formed on the article as it leaves the solution. For this purpose, the solution may be run out of the coating-bath quickly at first and then more slowly, or the articles may be lifted from the bath so as to leave the liquid in a similar manner. The proportions of the ingredients of the varnish may be varied so as to render it suitable for coating articles of metal, concrete, and other material.
